Any software can fail or become
corrupted. Backup software, too.
Computer connections can fail, even to a single computer. Employees can accidentally turn a backup off. The list is long of possible hazards.
Managed backup means we are watching it remotely. You don't have to think about it.
We provide an additional service on top of
online backup for greater
peace of mind at a slightly higher price.
The difference is we monitor and manage
the backups from our offices.
The increased price (usually between $12 and $30/month) covers:
Monitoring
that your backups are taking place as you want them, and alerting you
if they don't. You can also elect to have us automatically remote
connect to correct things
Unlimited
live support at no extra charge
Once we determine that a problem exists, Unlimited Support
means a technician connecting to your computer
remotely (with
your permission) and correcting things if someone or something
changes the settings, or the software becomes corrupted,
or for any other reason the backup stops working. Like all
software, sometimes these things happen.
Unlimited
coaching available - no extra charge We
can help you in organizing files and setting up
your computers according to Best Practices for data protection. We can
also suggest a system to back up some data locally (say on a hard drive
that is kept in a safe deposit box) and backup a smaller amount with
online backup, to keep down costs.
We
use only "business class" backup services that give much greater
reliability than some
others.
The
result is an even more secure online backup service.
Although online
backup is generally more reliable than any other type of backup, but we
still
find through our monitoring that about 5% of online backup
installations develop some unexpected issue that
requires manual attention during
each year. The small business using this service might not even notice
that there was a problem for days or weeks, if at
all., while their backup continues to grow more and more out of
date.
All software can become
messed up, and for years companies that really
cared about backup and could afford it would have someone manually
check to make sure the backup
actually took place correctly. The Best Practice for backup
on tape cartridges, DVDs, or other solid media was to test it
afterward, to make sure the backup was saved correctly. (We do not
recommend tape
cartridges any more to our
clients for this and other
reasons.)
So
we like to think of Online Managed Backup as having an angel looking
over your shoulder to make sure your data is protected.
